This Pomegranate Blood Orange Smash Cocktail is a quick cocktail that is refreshing and so easy to make! Perfect for happy hour!
I’m taking full advantage of citrus season this year! Whenever blood oranges are available I have to hold myself back from buying them all. I love their sweetness and obviously gorgeous color. They are perfect eating but also in cooking and this time I knew they’d be perfect in this refreshing cocktail! This cocktail is really easy to make and I give you lots of modifications for making a boozy drink or a mocktail.

Pomegranate Blood Orange Smash Cocktail
This weekend it is really warm and spring like in Austin, so a crisp refreshing cocktail was just calling my name. I love cocktails like this because they get all their flavor from fresh squeezed citrus and a smash of herbs. It’s just a versatile and always delicious combination.
The fragrant herbs and sweet citrus are a well balanced combination. They are also so vibrant and pretty in this cocktail. I love that about this combo! It means that without much effort on your part, you have a gorgeous and well balanced cocktail. Plus, it comes together in a few minutes with zero prep– yay!
Sparkling Blood Orange Cocktail
I also love citrus season! I have an affinity for anything lemon, see here and here, but something about blood orange always gets me! They always make a statement with their beautiful bright color. Plus, they are naturally sweet so you don’t have to do much because they are so delicious on their own.
Crushed ice is a must in this drink! You can use the crushed ice your freezer makes or crush it yourself with a rolling pin and ice in a ziploc bag. I like to use this canvas bag and mallet to make my crushed ice for cocktails. It’s super easy and nice additional to any home bar!
Easy Citrus Cocktail
This cocktail is so easy to make! But I do have a modification suggestions so you can make this up just the way you like it!
For a mocktail:
- Replace the vodka with additional blood orange juice
- Or you can do a lime/lemon/blood orange flavor soda like San Pellegrino
For a boozier drink:
- You can use sparkling wine or champagne to top off this drink instead of sparkling water
- It will act like more like a French 75 — so yum
If you don’t want vodka:
- Replace it with a silver or blanco tequila for a nice twist
If you can’t find Thyme:
- Fresh rosemary sprigs work great in this cocktail
