The Whip In is a hidden South Austin gem. Ok, maybe it’s not really that hidden, the Whip In has been around for a while but even during my 4 years in Travis Heights it has changed quite a bit. It’s a convince store turned bar, music venue that serves up some Indian dishes with a heavy Austin influence. This is a great place to pick up a bottle of local vino or peruse their large speciality beer section. Also, they have a great snack selection but not the kind you’d find at a regular convenient store, think more local hummus and pita chips. Of course once you step into this magical little place you’ll probably want to pull up a bar stool, grab a draft beer and stay a while. There’s almost always live music either inside the store or outside on their awesome, dog friendly patio. You can order up some great Austin-Indian fusion food at the counter then enjoy the music.
I subbed out the tomato chutney for cilantro chutney and it was quite divine. However they usually don’t allow many substitutions since most of their cuisine is locally sourced and carefully measured out per dish.
We got to hear the musical stylings of Mazel Tov Cocktail Hour. This bands plays traditional Yiddish wedding music and made me want to go home and watch Fiddler on the Roof.
The Whip In is perfect for a week night outting or an easy going Friday or Saturday. Be sure and check it out!
