Happy day after Thanksgiving! I hope you are all feeling stuffed with love and gratefulness. This is absolutely my most favorite time of year. I am a total sucker for everything holiday. And yes, that totally includes crazy holiday treats, meals and drinks. And lights, and decorations and yes my Christmas tree went up before Thanksgiving this year! (Thanks BMW!) But most of all this season, I am trying to take little time keep up with my workouts, be more purposeful about what I put in my body and give myself a little time to meditate, pray and be intentional with my days.
Since it’s Fit Friday I thought giving us all a little reminder about the wonderful benefits of yoga would be helpful during this stressful (and fun too!) holiday season. A big thanks to my friend Jessica Fajans for being our Fit Friday this month! She teaches at CorePower Yoga here in Austin and we’ll dive into all her favorite things!
PS- major shoutout to my friend Jessica Johnson for providing all the gorgeous photography today! Check out her work @jessijoh if you’re looking for a photographer in Austin.
I also am using this time to talk about Lung Cancer Awareness Month that also falls in November. Besides not smoking, there are lots of things we can all do to make our lungs a little stronger and cleaner. For example, I just got a ton of houseplants that help clean the air in my home. (Blog post coming soon on that!) Naturally, yoga’s breathing exercises help strength our lungs from the inside out!
Now that we are feeling all zen, I am kicking it over to Jessica Fajans to get all the deets about her passion for yoga and her fav Austin eats!
I took my first class in high school. I was always an athlete and loved trying new workouts. There was yoga at my gym at Lifetime Fitness in Dallas, and that’s where I really got into it. My mom and I would go every Sunday when I was home from college.
How did you decide to start teaching yoga?
After college I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do. I had recently moved back to Dallas from NYC and felt stuck. One day I woke up and thought, “I’m going to teacher training!” I heard it changes people’s lives, so why not?! It wasn’t until three years later that I was ready to actually teach classes and felt confident enough to do so.
What makes Core Power different from other studios?
I found CorePower on a whim when I did my teacher training in Huntington Beach. I fell in love with the classes. The physical aspect of challenging yourself, going deeper into your mind, the music, and the heat, of course! I moved to Denver where I completed a 200 hour teacher training and yoga sculpt training. They have six studios and some of the most amazing teachers. I left every class feeling inspired, rejuvenated, and enlightened! I was hooked. I learned so much at CorePower. When I moved back to Austin, the community here was just as amazing, as are the studios I’ve been to around the US. The teachers here care about their students, and you can feel their intention during each class.
What’s your favorite post-workout food or drink?
I love bone broth with ginger, turmeric, and black pepper. It’s so delicious and soothing to my body.
What’re some of your favorite local restaurants to indulge at?
You can find me at Picnik almost every morning. Otherwise, Soup Peddler (green goddess soup, yum!), and Taco Deli (I can eat salsa doña like water).
When you’re not eating great food or teaching at Core Power, where can we find you?
I’ll be at Auditorium Shores or Zilker Park dog park with my one and only, Cohen Brody, spinning at SoulCycle, studying for my masters, spending way too much time at Whole Foods, or having a cocktail on Rainey Street. Come say hi!
Go try out Jessica’s classes at CorePower Yoga Austin and look for her on the schedule Mondays at 7pm, Tuesdays at 4pm and Thursdays at 10:30am. She is at the Monarch location downtown. Perfect for catching a class after work or with a friend. Then head over to Whole Foods for a yummy, healthy post yoga sesh meal.
Follow along with Jessica’s adventures @jessicafajans and her adorable pup has his own page if you can handle the cuteness @cohenbrody!
