This Dirty Horchata Cocktail is a delightful drink that gets a pick me up from cold brew concentrate and homemade horchata!
I love a coffee cocktail, y’all! Like seriously. I also love a dirty horchata. What makes a horchata dirty you ask? Could be a shot of espresso or it could be a shot of rum. Depends on which time of day. In this case, we are talking about a double dirty horchata! This cocktail has both a jolt of caffeine and some smooth rum. Perfect for happy hour!

Dirty Horchata
Horchata is a spiced drink made from rice and things like cinnamon. I’ve tried lots of variations on horchata from our travels and I like the traditional sweetened rice milk one the best! You’ll often see horchata in taquerias but I’ve seen lots of takes on rice milk in Asian restaurants as well. Rice just lends itself so well to making drinks!
If you soak rice in water, the water becomes almost starchy. If you mix in some things like cinnamon or sugar then you are in for a real treat!
Homemade Horchata Concentrate
It is so easy to make your own horchata at home! I’ve tried a few bottled, store bought variations but nothing compares to fresh horchata so I like to make my own. This particular recipe makes more of a concentrate if you will. It’s heavily spiced and sweetened making it the perfect way to jazz up a cocktail or punch up your morning joe!
Pro-Tip: I’ve seen several ways to make horchata and I prefer to add the sweetener and cinnamon during the steeping process. This allows all the flavor to be imparted into the liquid then the solids to be strained out. I’ve found this makes for a smoother drinking experience and you won’t get any of the grittiness from the cinnamon or other spices this way as opposed to processes that add the spices after steeping the rice and water.
