Lately I have been sprucing up my morning routine. I have to admit I was sorta of getting in a little rut. Waking up late, skipping breakfast or grabbing tacos on the way into the office, maybe skipping that morning shower or walk with dog, you know normal running out the door kind of stuff. Now this comes as a little surprise to me since I have always been, or at least considered myself to be, a morning person. I love mornings. I love getting up early and getting things done while everyone else is sleeping. It makes me feel productive and energized throughout the rest of my day. So when this habit started to slip a little bit, so did everything else. It was like having life clutter or something. I was losing those precious hours and its not like I that extra sleep was helping, my alarm was still going off I was just choosing to snooze right on through. Now, I am still occasionally guilty of that, but really I have been trying to get back on the wagon with a great morning routine.

Morning routines often start in the evenings and therein I noticed was the root of all of this. Being in the food community in Austin is probably one of the best and most defining aspects of my life. The pounds and stress all that delicious food takes on your body… ehh not so great. That is not something that gets talked about much with me and my foodie friends. I mean really who wants to talk about how healthy a burger is? Hello buzzkill. But for me, I wanted to at least incorporate some of my healthier habits here into the blog. Have a conversation about keeping a fitness routine while still eating and balancing all the delicious things! For the whole month of May, each Friday I am going to introduce you to one of my fitness trainers. They are not just my trainers but friends and they also happen to eat really well, travel and do lots of fun things that I like to talk about here. I am calling these Fit Fridays, so you’ll meet my first trainer tomorrow! Don’t worry, this isn’t turning into a health or fitness blog, there will still be plenty of pies, wine and noodles, but I thought a little balance and peek into some other aspects of my life is really what this whole thing is all about!
Let’s be honest, I am never going to stop going to events, tastings or cooking and having people over for dinner, so something else had to change. I decided that no excuses, no matter how late I was out or what I ate or drank the night before, I was going to get up on time and get a workout in. And thats exactly what I’ve been doing the past eight weeks or so. I feel great, a little sore and tired somedays, but I am sleeping better and feel happier and more energetic.
Once I got back into working out, I started drinking a lot, and I mean a lot more, water! Which is a great thing, but I also wanted to improve my digestion a bit, so my co-worker suggested I drink honey lemon water in the morning. I’ve been doing it a few times a week and have noticed a little bit of a difference, plus it is just delicious. I warm up some filtered water, add about a tablespoon of fresh squeezed lemon juice and a drop or two or local honey. I helps me feel more hydrated after my workouts and the citrus from the lemon is supposed to help with digestion. The honey adds a touch of sweetness and all the goodness that goes along with honey!
It makes for a pretty quick routine and I always put it in a cute teacup and it just makes mornings seem a little bit nicer! It’s the small things y’all! Another thing I have been doing is switching the with the honey lemon water with instead a tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar in a little bit of cold water and a squeeze of lemon. It’s a bit sour but I am getting used to it and has been helping digest all those crazy, rich and delicious foods. What are some of your morning routines? I want to hear about ’em!

Ha! I got to the almost-end of this and I was like “I need to tell Natalie to add some apple cider vinegar to this routine” but you beat me to it!!
I try to drink some ACV every morning. I’m actually working on a blog about this right now! My favorite way to get it in is a (ultra-healthy, not at all close to the reason thing) “pina colada” – Take a tablespoon of ACV, 1/8 cup organic pineapple juice, about a cup of coconut water, and a squeeze of lime or lemon! You can top off with a Topo Chico floater if you’re in the mood as well 😉 It’s my favorite thing to drink in the morning, especially after a run! Not sour at all!
